What is Translation Memory (TM)? The simplest definition of TM is that it is software that stores words, phrases or paragraphs that have already been translated, in order to assist human translators. The translation memory stores the source text and its corresponding translation in language pairs called “translation units”.
Although we work primarily with human translators doing the entire translation process, the scope and size of certain projects sometimes necessitates the use of TM. Even with advances in technology, TM is not a stand-alone method for precise translation. However, when used in tandem with human translators, it can do a lot of the heavy lifting in terms of translating large volumes of text which can then be proof-read by a human translator.
